Sports Massage

A sports massage is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one – it’s also used by people who are active and work out often. Gardeners, builders and farmers are all my clients. The focus isn’t on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance.

Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibilty and to prevent injuries.

A combination of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Facilitated stretching is a common technique. It helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.

Types of massage

The different types of massage include:

  • Post-event which  brings body tissues to normal state.
  • Restorative used during training allows athletes to train harder and minimise chance of injury.
  • Rehabilitative is aimed at alleviating pain due to injury. A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem sustained through sport.
